Holly Ridge Happenings

Children (Learning and Teaching)

Last week I took my children to a restaurant.

My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our head he said, “God is good. God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and Justice for all! Amen.”

Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, he heard a women remark, “That’s what’s wrong with this country, kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream!”

Hearing this my son burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?”

As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job and God certainly wasn’t mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.”

“Really,” my son asked. “Cross my heart.” Then in a theatrical whisper, he added “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream.”

A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes. Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son stared at his for a minute. He picked up his sundae and without a word walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, “Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes and my soul is good already.”

Well, I’m back, trying to do better. Thanks for all the calls, prayers, cards and love sent to me. While I was so sick. I’ll tell you, I believe if I had not had the two covid shots, I might have died, but God is good and I suppose I’m left for a purpose if only to aggravate everyone. Ha!

Have I not commanded you? be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you where ever you go. Joshua 1:9.

Recent visitors in the community were David and Patricia Hill from Cleburne, Texas. David is the son f the late Bro. Hill who pastored at Holly Ridge Baptist Church when David and Gary were growing up. Lyle Russell from Bastrop stopped in early one morning on his way to fish at Poverty Point. We did some remembering when and who. Good little visit. His mom was a Coates.

Billy and Linday Ream Nix were here from Neuman, Ga., for her momma, Lillian Reems’, birthday. Well, it was also Linda on the same day. Ha! I'm so glad they came on out for a visit with me.

Here for a visit from Iowa were John and Emmy Forbes and Heidi. They went out to eat at Catfish Charlie’s with Alan and Trish Thompson,  Ramona, Rachele and Reina Rawls. Had a great time!
