Lady Dragons undefeated after first five games

Mangham’s Lady Dragons are 5-0 as their 2020 softball season opens.

The Lady Dragons opened their season Feb 25 with a 6-5 victory over University Academy before going on to win 8-7 over Ouachita Parish High School on Feb. 27 and then sweeping all three of their games in the Polar Bear Classic over the weekend in Monroe.

The Lady Dragons took a quick lead in the victory over University Academy when Anna Myers homered on a 2-2 count, scoring four runs to give Mangham a 4-0 lead. 

The Dragons widened the lead an unanswered run in the third and fourth innings to lead 6-0 going into the fifth inning. University tried to bounce back, scoring twice in the fifth inning, once in the sixth and twice in the seventh, but fell short of reclaiming the lead and Mangham won 6-5.

Myers was the winning pitcher for the game, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out one player.

Madison Thomas led the hitting for Mangham, going two for three. Myers, Thomas, Kara Wilcher, Abby Pruitt, Dorothy Williamson and Gabrielle Riggins each scored a run.

Next, the Lady Dragons took on Ouachita Parish, earning a last-minute victory when Leah Waller singled to score a run and break a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the last inning.

Ouachita came out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

However, the Dragons came back with six unanswered runs in the second inning. Camm Neathery hit a triple in the second inning, driving in three runs to give Mangham the lead. The Dragons scored six points during the rest of the second inning, including a walk by Kara Wilcher, a single by Leah Waller and an error on a ball put in play by Dorothy Williamson, who also scored a home run for the Dragons later in the game.

The game score remained at 6-3 in favor of the Dragons until the seventh inning when Ouachita scored four times to Mangham’s single run to tie the game up at 7-7 before Waller drove home the winning run.

Anna Myers was the winning pitcher, allowing ten hits and seven runs while striking out two players.

The Lady Dragons dominated the Polar Bear Classic this weekend.

They started the match by defeating Grant 18-8 in a game that was never in doubt.

Myers was the winning pitcher, striking out eight batters while allowing five hits and three runs. Riggins also pitched one inning, striking out one and allowing three hits and five runs.

Leading scorers were Wilcher and Neathery with four runs each, Thomas, Pruitt and Williamson with two each and Riggins and Casey Wyatt with one each.

Saturday, the Lady Dragons defeated South Terrebonne 12-1. Mangham scored eight times in the second inning, three times in the third and once in the fourth inning before their opponents scored their lone run.

Riggins was the winning pitcher, striking out three batters while giving up three hits and one run.

In scoring, Morgan Cruse, Wilcher and Neathery each had two runs and Willliamson, Thomas, Pruitt, Myers, Olivia Dannehl and Waller each had one.

The Lady Dragons finished off the tournament by defeating Caldwell Parish 5-2.

Caldwell came out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but the Dragons scored three times in the fourth inning to lead 3-0. The Lady Dragons put the game away with two runs in the seventh inning.

Myers was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts while giving up five hits and two runs.

Cruse scored twice for the Dragons while  Neathery, Williamson and Riggins scored once each.
